SAN PEDRO DE ATACAMA

San Pedro de Atacama is a city located in the province of El Loa, in the Antofagasta region of northern Chile. It is located in the 105,000 km² Atacama Desert, stretching from the Pacific Ocean coast to the Andes Mountains.

The Atacama Desert's main characteristic is its extreme aridity. Some areas have not seen rainfall for decades. This condition is due to a combination of factors, such as the presence of the Humboldt Current, which cools the coast and prevents evaporation, and the rain shadow cast by the Andes Mountains. San Pedro de Atacama, despite being part of the desert, lies in a geographic basin formed by the rising Andes and the Domeyko Mountains. Therefore, its desert landscape contrasts with regions of oases formed by groundwater flowing down from the Andes Mountains and emerging in the Salar de Atacama basin.

The formation of microclimates in San Pedro de Atacama offers varied and different landscapes such as: canyons, sand dunes, volcanoes, altiplano, geysers, salt flats and lagoons.
