VALLECITO

LET MAGIC AND IMAGINATION GUIDE YOU ON YOUR VISIT TO THE MAGIC BUS

The Salt Mountain Range is characterized by its white and ochre hues, a result of the accumulation of mineral salts over millions of years. This landscape, reminiscent of the lunar surface, was shaped by wind and water erosion, creating capricious, steep formations. On the vallecito tour, we visited a section of the Salt Mountain Range a little further from San Pedro, which is a veritable open-air geological museum.

Among these natural wonders, we find salt mines and the Magic bus (an abandoned bus in the middle of the mountain range, a vestige of human activity that left its mark on this arid environment.

The hidden treasure of the salt mines has been a strategic resource throughout history, and its exploitation has left a profound mark on the Atacama economy and society. The indigenous peoples of this region used salt as a condiment, preservative, and trade tool. It was also an important element, along with sulfur, in the refining of copper.
