RAINBOW VALLEY
AN EXPLOSION OF COLOR IN THE HEART OF THE DESERT
The Rainbow Valley, nestled in the Domeyko Mountains and located in the Rio Grande region, 90 km from San Pedro, captivates geology and archaeology enthusiasts with its strikingly colorful formations. This is all due to a wide variety of rock types. Its formation ranges from minerals such as clay, sodium chloride, and calcium sulfate to plutonic rocks formed in magma chambers by the cooling of magma. In fact, this is the tour's main attraction: the rocks with green undertones that, along with the white, gray, and red, give the valley its name.
Its grandiose formations contrast with the local medicinal vegetation, such as rica-rica and pingo-pingo. Here, it's common to observe a great biodiversity of birds and guanacos, the wild relatives of the llama.
At Hierbas Buenas, we take a journey through time through rock art. It's a highly significant archaeological site in San Pedro de Atacama, known primarily for its ancient inscriptions recorded by ancient peoples who left a reflection of their beliefs, activities, and way of life.
