GEYSER DEL TATIO

FEEL THE FORCE OF NATURE WHERE WATER AND STEAM SPRING FROM THE DEPTHS OF THE EARTH

The Tatio Geyser is the largest geothermal field in the Southern Hemisphere and the third largest in the world. Located 4,300 meters above sea level, hundreds of geysers spew boiling water and steam.

To appreciate the geyser activity in all its splendor, we set out early. The low nighttime temperatures cause the steam to condense, forming columns that can reach 10 meters in height.

Geysers form when rocks superheated by volcanic magma heat groundwater. As the water heats, it turns to steam and accumulates underground. When the pressure is sufficient, the steam breaks through the surface and expels the boiling water. Here, we can also see bubbling mud pools and volcanic landscapes.
